Production in Additive Manufacturing

Finishing processes

Course description

The increasing use of advanced materials and technologies in the production of polymeric and metallic components has led the industry to place greater emphasis on key parameters such as reliability, production efficiency, and quality.

The course provides a structured overview of finishing techniques for additive components, including both traditional processes and innovative solutions specific to additive manufacturing.

Particular attention is dedicated to the integration of design, production, and post-process principles, with the aim of optimizing component performance from the early stages of product development. This strategic approach allows for superior functional and aesthetic results, reducing time and costs throughout the entire production cycle.

Main Topics

Surface quality of AM parts

  • Dimensional and surface characteristics of AM components
  • Industrial requirements and technological gap

Finishing processes

  • Classification of processes
  • Finishing mechanisms, surface and subsurface modification for different processes
  • Advantages and limitations
  • Aspects of integrated design.

Practical Application

  • Laboratory experience: surface characterization before and after finishing tests.

Participant profile

Process technologists, application engineers

Objectives

– Provide the necessary knowledge for effective design of AM components and the production and post-processing cycle

– Illustrate the finishing possibilities of additive components, specifically for complex external and internal geometries

– Demonstrate how it is essential in design to consider the needs related to the AM production process and subsequent post-processing and finishing phases

– Guide towards effective adoption of additive technologies in production.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

– Critically analyze the characteristics of polymeric and metallic materials used in additive manufacturing, with particular attention to the implications on finishing and integration with traditional processes.

– Evaluate and select the most suitable finishing technologies (traditional and innovative) based on the material, component geometry, and functional and aesthetic requirements.

– Provide Design for Manufacturing guidelines, adopting a “design for post-processing” approach to optimize final quality.

– Develop integrated process strategies that combine additive manufacturing and finishing technologies.
