Discussions with potential clients revealed that the CuZn42 alloy was of interest for use in marine valves and pre-series food devices. The need to expand the range of processable materials led Autebo to modify an additive manufacturing powder bed fusion machine produced by 3D4steel. Brass presents processing challenges due to the separation of phases with different volatility during fusion. During the preliminary investigation, an industrial component was produced in collaboration with a potential user.
The experimental phase highlighted that a traditional filtration system tended to have an extremely short lifespan because the sub-micrometric condensate rich in Zn seals the filtering surfaces. This is particularly detrimental as AUTEBO had obtained certification for landfill disposal of the filters. Tests indicated that to achieve TRL8 (demonstration in an operational environment), or workshop testing, it is necessary to introduce pre-filtration systems that do not cause significant pressure losses and allow for the removal of reduced powders while preserving the presence of nitrogen within the protection circuit.
