Course description

The course provides the tools to understand what virtual reality and augmented reality are and how to use these technologies with the available tools.

The course combines theoretical learning with an experience at the CIM Digital Factory pilot line, where participants will have hands-on exposure to the technologies previously discussed.

  • Introduction to mixed realities, with use cases and clarification of terminologies (VR/AR/XR)
  • In-depth exploration of purely technological aspects: devices and development environments, the engineering production pipeline.
  • Overview of the professional roles involved in the design and development of virtual reality systems.
  • Exploration of the tools available on the market; insights into project management and make or buy strategies.
  • Lifecycle of new technologies and related expectations, considerations on the challenges and bets associated with investments for technological upgrades in companies.
  • Analysis of the history of XR technologies and the Virtuality Continuum, and related future prospects.

Actors from small and medium enterprises, from various backgrounds and roles, interested in emerging technologies and their relationship with the digitalization of business and production processes.

Objectives

The course aims to provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the terminologies, concepts, and devices of Extended Realities (XR), particularly virtual and augmented reality. Additionally, it aims to offer an overview of the uses of these technologies in the Industry 4.0 context.
