Context

Italian regions suffer significant damage every year due to landslides and floods, averaging approximately 2.8 billion euros (source: Greenpeace). In 2024 alone, recorded climate anomalies compared to the 1991-2020 thirty-year period increased by 38% (source: Icona Clima), confirming a worrying trend linked to the ongoing climate crisis. In remote areas lacking traditional network infrastructure, the need arises for connectivity solutions capable of ensuring data access under any geographical and environmental conditions.
For cutting-edge companies like Apogeo Space, which operate in the development of picosatellite constellations, this challenge represents a strategic opportunity: enabling innovative environmental monitoring and risk prevention services (landslides, fires, floods) through interoperable and scalable satellite technologies.

Solution

In this context, the solution developed by Apogeo Space in collaboration with CIM and TIM Enterprise represents a concrete opportunity to improve prevention and response capabilities. A prototype solution has been developed for landslide detection through satellite and terrestrial connectivity. The solution includes the development of specific sensors, aggregation of field data, and the provision of an AI-based IoT platform to smartly monitor and visualize the data collected. The use of low-power direct-to-satellite sensors allows for constant monitoring of the territory, even in isolated areas or those lacking external power and traditional connectivity. The ultimate goal: the definition of functional prototypes of specific sensors “Sensor Node IOT” and the related platform for data and service management.

 

Impact

PIOTAS has demonstrated the feasibility of a complete monitoring chain, capable of transforming data collected on the ground into accessible information even when traditional networks are unavailable. The solution allows for the extension of observation to the most isolated areas, the timely identification of significant variations, and support for the planning of targeted inspections and interventions. The developed architecture also constitutes a replicable and scalable basis for further environmental monitoring applications, from soil stability to fires and floods.
