Stella della Mole: design and additive manufacturing for the world of cinema

Context

With the Stella della Mole, the National Museum of Cinema in Turin pays tribute to personalities from the cinematic and audiovisual culture through a symbol that belongs to the city. The project was born in 2020, when the Torino Film Festival chose the star overlooking the Mole Antonelliana as an element of its identity and introduced the Stella della Mole Award for artistic innovation.

The collaboration with CIM gives shape to this bond. Through additive technologies, the three-dimensional geometry of the star becomes a statuette, completed by a base that in turn recalls the shapes of the Mole. Local manufacturing expertise thus enters a cultural project rooted in Turin and aimed at the wider world of cinema.

Solution

The star reflects the shape of the twelve-pointed stellated dodecahedron on the summit of the Mole. Its creation is guided by the digital CAD design developed by the Polytechnic of Turin, which defines the component sections and the areas to be melted in each layer. From this model, the aluminum alloy star is born through the L-PBF (Laser Powder Bed Fusion) process.
The star grows layer by layer. A thin layer of metal powder is distributed on the platform and the laser selectively melts the areas defined by the model. The platform lowers, new powder is added, and the sequence resumes until the geometry is complete.

The base is instead designed and produced by CIM in PA12, a polymer material also processed via additive manufacturing. Metal and polymer printing are thus combined in the same object. Layer-by-layer printing allows for the creation of this complex shape and offers geometric freedom and customization possibilities, central aspects in the design of the Stella della Mole.

The color also tells the story of what the award celebrates. The green of CinemAmbiente draws attention to the environment and nature, while the pink of the Lovers Film Festival gives a voice to the culture and rights of the LGBTQI+ community. Blue speaks of innovation, gold pays tribute to a career, and silver accompanies the Torino Film Festival’s recognition of creativity and artistic innovation.

Impact

With the Stella della Mole, the work of the CIM pilot line reaches the hands of the personalities to whom the Museum pays tribute. The award brings typically industrial technologies into the world of culture and makes their applications visible. For CIM, this collaboration renews the relationship with the Museum and the bond with the city through a tangible contribution.

CIM produces the Stella della Mole, the award of the National Museum of Cinema in Turin, using additive manufacturing. Inspired by the star atop the Mole Antonelliana and produced in aluminum alloy, it combines manufacturing expertise and cinematic culture through a symbol of the city.
