FIXIT: shaping innovation
FIXIT is a human-robot platform that represents the full spectrum of digital skills present at CIM. It is an initiative that encompasses and enhances the entire expertise of the Competence Center.
It is a collaborative robot based on an AMR and a drone, powered by Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Additive Manufacturing, Edge and Cloud technologies, and other enabling Industry 4.0 technologies. But FIXIT is much more than that. It is a cross-functional innovation platform where it is possible to experiment with technologies and solutions and bring value to various sectors. Future developments of FIXIT may involve different application areas: from industry to education, from healthcare to Horeca, and from aerospace to mobility.
It is a living project, in constant evolution, which grows thanks to the contribution of those who develop it every day and those who choose to become part of it.
For this reason, CIM is constantly looking for university students and thesis candidates interested in actively contributing to the development of FIXIT, bringing new ideas, skills, and perspectives. Our goal is to build a community around the project, capable of fueling its growth and innovation over time.
Working with FIXIT means coming into close contact with the technologies present at CIM: a highly innovative and growth-oriented environment where it is possible to experiment, gain hands-on experience with advanced solutions, and acquire concrete skills that are immediately applicable in the professional world.
Our vision is to transform technological ecosystems to empower people.

Ground Vehicle
Scout Mini is a compact UGV with all-wheel drive and differential steering, equipped with independent suspensions. The algorithms for autonomous movement and obstacle avoidance were developed by a multidisciplinary team of students who collaborated through their master's theses.
Control Interface
FIXIT will be equipped with a tablet that serves as the robot's main digital interface. Its dedicated software will include mission control, maps, data analysis, and much more, enabling total control and customization of the device.
Aerial Vehicle
The UAV is continuously evolving and constantly improving thanks to the work of master's degree students. The model we show here was designed to be printed internally through our Additive Manufacturing pilot line.
I chose to apply for an innovation thesis at CIM4.0 because I considered it a growth opportunity as a student and a great chance to practically apply what I learned theoretically during my Master's degree regarding the world of automation and robotics.
Furthermore, I was struck by the possibility of conducting a thesis on a topic that is just beginning in the world of research and that I could leverage in a future job. Finally, a professional environment would certainly be more educational than a university setting.
I must say that I was not initially familiar with CIM4.0; the thesis was proposed to me by my supervisor.
The project itself interested me because drones have always fascinated me, but I never had the chance to dedicate time and energy to them.
However, CIM and Orlando presented themselves by promising thesis students a leading role in the project's development, and this was particularly pleasing to me, as I believed (and still believe) it would allow me to grow in multiple aspects, not just technical ones.
My passion for Automation and Robotics drove me to get involved in an innovation project at CIM4.0. The opportunity to engage with emerging technologies in the industrial field was further motivation to immerse myself in the Competence Center environment.
I chose to do my thesis on the Fixit project because I am passionate about technology and the digital world. Therefore, I saw the opportunity to work and learn at CIM4.0, which operates in the field of Industry 4.0, and thus complement my mechanical engineering background with new technologies through additive manufacturing.
