Design for Additive Manufacturing

Design for Additive Manufacturing – Advanced

Course description

The potential advantages offered by Additive Manufacturing can be fully exploited only with adequate knowledge of this family of processes and the possibilities and limitations of design. Materials, geometric freedom, process constraints, post-processing, and subsequent finishing are all important factors that contribute to defining the quality and performance of the product. This course aims to provide participants with the necessary knowledge for effective component design, with particular attention to the added value that can be obtained when a component is designed by leveraging all the advantages of additive technologies.

Main Topics

Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM)

  • Geometric freedom in additive manufacturing
  • Production requirements and specifications
  • Part orientation and support structures

Design workflow

  • Definition of design space, constraints, and load conditions
  • Towards optimized design (material and geometry)
  • Application of DfAM rules
  • Design for post-processing
  • Design validation

Topological Optimization and Generative Design

  • Optimization of part design through numerical techniques
  • Practical application

Participant profile

Designers, Application Engineers

Objectives

  • Provide the necessary knowledge for effective AM component design
  • Illustrate the possibilities of topological optimization and generative design in component design
  • Show how it is essential to consider the needs related to the AM production process and subsequent post-processing and finishing phases in design
  • Demonstrate how to implement design for additive manufacturing in a practical case
  • Guide towards effective adoption of additive technologies in production

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

– Understand the basic principles of geometry optimization based on functional requirements

– Understand the advantages this approach brings in defining the added value of the product.

– Integrate the concepts of design for additive manufacturing into the design

– Integrate constraints related to post-processing and component finishing into the design

– Know the strategies for selecting the material/technology that lead to the best design based on functional requirements

Participation conditions

Knowledge of additive manufacturing techniques, their advantages, and limitations is a prerequisite. A basic understanding of technical drawing and 3D CAD modeling is recommended.
