Product Design: From Requirements to Form

Course description

Well-designed products and/or services are capable of integrating all creative, material, and technological qualities within a circular economy context; they also express an aesthetic quality consistent with the project’s mission, creating a harmonious balance between form and function. Six different experiences will discuss the three main areas of the design process: ideation, design, and communication.
The course is conducted by CIM with the contribution of:

Main Topics

Experience 1: Bionics, Natural Structures, and Analog Models (Carmelo Di Bartolo)
Exploration of natural structures, materials, mechanisms, and aesthetics with the aim of
achieving creative analog models and innovative solutions for problem-solving.

Experience 2: Methodological and Operational Tools for Generating Concept Ideas (Camilla Fecchio)
Overview of the main methods and tools to stimulate creativity and generate innovative ideas, with
the aim of providing operational techniques to be used consistently with the project’s mission.

Experience 3: Incremental Innovation and Radical Innovation (Carmelo Di Bartolo)
Analysis of the opportunities offered by incremental and radical innovation in the processes of ideation,
development, and communication of products and services.

Experience 4: From Requirements to Form (Roberto Giolito)
In-depth study of the process that transforms functional, technical, emotional, and usability requirements into
innovative designs. A specific focus will be dedicated to car design and future mobility visions.

Experience 5: Advanced Design: Interaction Between Product, Service, and System (Carmelo Di Bartolo)
Analysis of design methods for advanced products and for building a balanced ecosystem
that integrates artifacts and territory.

Experience 6: Design System: From Spoon to City (Giulio Ceppi)
Exploration of the concept of design system as a tool to ensure consistency and scalability in
design, from the smallest object to the urban context.
